Baste - this refers to a loose temporary stitching used to hold fabric in place prior to sewing or gathering of fabric. It's a careful hand sewing technique, but sometimes done with thesewing machine.

A basted sleeve placket.

This techniques is mostly applied when sewing jackets.its used in holding collars, hems and lapels in place.
